Two Cold Coffees, Very Different Results
Iced coffee and cold brew are often used interchangeably, but they're made completely differently — and taste nothing alike. Here's what you need to know.
Iced Coffee
Iced coffee is simply hot-brewed coffee poured over ice. It's quick, easy, and familiar. The downside: hot brewing extracts more acidity, and dilution from melting ice can make it watery. Best enjoyed immediately.
Cold Brew
Cold brew is made by steeping coarsely ground coffee in cold water for 12–24 hours. The result is a smooth, low-acid, naturally sweet concentrate that's incredibly rich and satisfying. It's less bitter, easier on the stomach, and stays fresh in the fridge for up to two weeks.
Which Is Better?
Neither — it depends on what you want. Iced coffee is faster and brighter. Cold brew is smoother and more complex. Both are delicious with the right beans.
